Our first trip out of the city was to visit the region of Guatape where there is a large lake (a flooded valley for water storage much like Windermere), rivers and waterfalls. And most famously, one large rock (la Piedra Piñol), a granite monolith that you can climb for a view of the lake and mountains.

We spent one night camping at a "mystic park" run by a local Shaman. We arrived very late to set up (it gets dark here at 6 pm every day of the year, and gets dark quickly) and had a little adventure crawling through the bush and mud being surprised by enormous sculptures of indian chiefs in the dark. Even though I am a tough Aussie farm girl who can pick up cockroaches and spiders, I felt like a bit of a princess in a new bush, with strange nightime noises! The next day we got a tour of the property with the shaman, it is a sacred place of the native Americans and he is the guardian of the sites. We had a "therapy" session that involved a lot of standing in mud, feeling the vibrations of rocks, talking to trees and finally a cleansing in a closed waterfall accessed by crawling through a cave. All in all an interesting and nice experience.
