Flamingos in La Guajira

La Guajira is the northernmost province of Colombia, bordering Venezuela  Here we visited a small national park, a system of brine water lakes that is a sanctuary for hundreds of types of birds, including flamingos.

We camped on the beach for a few days and took a boat ride on the lake with a local guide for bird watching. We were taken in a beautiful carved wooden fishing boat with a homemade sail, which looked like old coffee bags stitched together. Normally November is a good time to see large groups (hundreds) of flamingos, but they had migrated early this year. Colombia is a stopover between their other favorite spots in Patagonia and France. I was very excited to see a large flash of brilliant pink in the sky, a very beautiful pink duck, but not a flamingo. After hours of searching we finally found four, a little family with birds too young to migrate.
