Leaving Antioquia we travelled through the regions of Córdoba and Sucre on the way to Cartagena, camping on the beaches in Coveñas and searching the artisan villages for hats.
This is a region of artisans with many villages selling the traditional black and white straw hats, mochilas (patterned bags made by the indigenous), brightly painted carved wooden birds, various things made from coconuts and more. These handicrafts eventually make it to shops in the cities, but the best quality goods at half the price are found in the villages. And not easily found, we had to go exploring through many little towns and muddy roads to find hat heaven in Tuchín. The quality of the hats is measured by the number of fibres in each weave, I bought a beautiful "21" (it was hard to choose just one, they were all so lovely).
